1998 National Specialty Champion

Joshua's Sand Valley Sam A.K.A. "Cowboy" CD III,
the first OFA "Excellent" (AMB28E39M-T) male Bulldog in the world. The
"Cowboy strain" of American bulldog is a complete outcross to the
contemporary modern American Bulldog. Contemporary meaning, strains of
Bulldogs made popular in the past 30 years by breeders such as Alan
Scott, John D. Johnson, Williamson, Painter, Tate, etc. The "Cowboy
strain" is the popular choice of many breeders in America and abroad to
widen the American Bulldog gene pool. "Cowboy" winner at the 1998
National Specialty Show as well as an CD III Titled Bulldog was
truly a remarkable animal. I've watched this Bulldog knock a 200lb. wild
boar off his feet and drag him 20 yards before I could stop him. Cowboy,
a real Ol' Time Bulldog, literally caught over 100 wild hogs and never
considered giving up on any bad boar. I could then take Cowboy squirrel
hunting, tell him to look for'em and he'd look up every tree sniff
evrytrunk and if there was a squirrel around he'd find him. Then if you
needed a trail dog for a wounded deer come get Cowboy. Not only would he
trail but if the deer tried to jump and run Ol' Cowboy would catch him.
Another aspect that we are extremely proud of, Cowboy has produced many
generations of certified hips and for many years was the only OFA
Excellent bulldog to produce an Excellent. Now at Joshua
Kennels...because of Cowboy we have generations of OFA Excellent
bulldogs but, more importantly, generations of ol' fashioned Bulldogs
that are willing to do modern day work, such as, show conformation, home
protection, Shutzhund, Ring sport, weight pulling etc.
December 24, 1999, while I and my family were out for
dinner, someone came on our property and poisoned Cowboy with
anti-freeze. I buried Cowboy Christmas morning. I don't understand
things like this however, God has blessed us with an outstanding son of
Cowboy, "Nat'l CH. Joshua's Ol' Southern White" aka Josh. The "Legend"
continues!!!!!!!

Josh is an outstanding son of Joshua's Sand Valley Sam aka Cowboy, OFA
Excellent, and Joshua's Shunammite,
OFA Good, giving him a heritage of over 80 years of nothing but "Ol'
Southern White" bulldogs in his pedigree.
When it comes to confirmation, it's as if Josh read the standard and
requested his picture as the example. He is as
correct front and back as you'll ever see. You should compare Josh's
picture to John D. Johnson's foundation sire
(in the section on this site "The Original Bulldog") Sand Man the Great,
as you will see, Josh looks exactly like
"Sandy". Perfect structure, ideal head of the ol' time bulldogs, true
"Southern American Bulldog" temperament.
In addition, he was protection trained by French ring trainer Bill
Woody, making him one of the most complete
American bulldogs in the World. At age 7 he won the NKC Nationals Best
in Show and started his training in Schutzhund.
Shortly he had his SchH BH title. To top things off, he like his sire,
Josh is OFA Excellent. Lem Miller author of
"American Bulldogs Stories, Facts and Legends" said; "Josh is the most
complete bulldog I've ever seen,
and the best bulldog I've ever had. On February 4th Josh left our porch
where he spent most of the time guarding
the house and my family. Figuring he went to the woods (we live in the
country...why Josh ran loose) we searched for
Josh that Monday night till our batteries in our flash lights burned
out. Tuesday morning I got up early to continue
the search knowing he went to the woods to die. Josh had never been sick
a day in his life but in the last couple weeks
at age 11 years, he stopped eating. Three different Vets could find
nothing wrong...x-rays, blood work, ultra sound etc. But that Tuesday
morning I found him in a beautiful ravine barely alive. I rushed him to
Macon Georgia to a recommended Veterinarian
specialist who after much testing, could not help Josh, as he had
decided his time was up. I gave him a big hug looked
him in the eyes and told him I loved him and said Thank you. Looking
deep into my eyes he was then gone.

Joshua's Shunammite...Josh's momma
AKA "Baby" OFA Good,
AMB-84G24F-T(Hips and Elbows). Baby is from Uncle Ralph's Ol' family strain of
"White English" aka Ol' Southern White Bulldogs. Uncle Ralph, 80 years
young, has raised these Ol' Southern Bulldogs all his life and his father before
him. With absolutely no contemporary strains, (contemporary being strains
developed in the past 30 years) such as Johnson, Scott, Williamson, Painter,
Tate, Etc. Baby is one of the hottest producers of hard driving,
intelligent Bulldogs in the country. Baby 85 lean pounds, is a big boned heavily
muscled bitch, that throws these characteristics in her offspring. Early
in March 97 Al Banuelos and Tom Riche famous Bulldog Schutzhund trainers from
California came to Joshua Kennels in Florida and evaluated our Bulldogs. When
they began to agitate Baby she slipped her collar and went for Al, not the
sleeve, but his face. This was the first time she had been worked in protection.
Needless to say, Al made the adjustment and fed her the sleeve. Both Al and Tom
were very impressed with her natural protection instincts and hard bite. Much
training later, Baby worked as a full-time security Bulldog on patrol with
American K-9 Guardian Security service.Folks if your looking for the bulldog that Alan Scott & John D. Johnson started
with, Baby is it. We know for a fact there have been no outcrosses of any kind
for at least 80 years. In this strain there is nothing but "Ol' Southern
Bulldogs." (now retired)
